FALKIRK
NARROW BOAT CRUISE
Introduction:
Falkirk was not even on our list of things to do when we planned our Scotland trip. However, on our Harry Potter Train ride, we sat across a very sweet elderly Scottish couple, who suggested we tried it. So here we are!
Hiring a narrow boat is something we have never done before! It was all so exciting! But the most impressive thing about this journey is the Falkirk Wheel. It is a rotating boat lift, yes you read that right, a boat elevator! It connects two canals : Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. This wheel is named after the nearby town Falkirk.
There is roughly 79ft difference of height between the canals that the wheel sits on, thats aboutthe height of an eight-story building!

We rented our canal boat in Falkirk for 3 nights and prepared to embark on a magical journey as we navigated the tranquil Scottish canals We didn't have enough time to go too far, so we only explored a part of union canal.
Our boat was 60ft in length and consisted of two bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a living room! Check out my video HERE as I walk through the boat, its really cute!.
This experience is where old-world charm meets breathtaking scenery, making it the ultimate destination for an unforgettable and peaceful getaway.
As we slowly cruised along the Union Canal, we were captivated by the spellbinding beauty of the Scottish countryside. The calm waters reflect the lush greenery and ancient landmarks, creating scenes worthy of a fairytale!

Everday we would cruise for about 4-5 hours, there are some canal side cafe's and a historical town called Linlithgow, we stopped here the second day and explored the town a little bit, they even have a Castle!. Highly recommend!
Oh, and the history! You'll encounter the iconic Falkirk Wheel, a true marvel of engineering. Picture yourself being lifted to different canal levels and marveling at this modern wonder that tells tales of Scotland's past. It truly was incredible!
But it's not just about history; it's about finding serenity. As we glide along the peaceful canals, the gentle swaying of the boat and the soft lapping of the water create a sense of tranquility that's hard to find elsewhere. Each turn reveals breathtaking vistas, leaving us in awe of Scotland's natural beauty. Plus it was wild black berry season, and we were able to pick them as we cruised!
The best part? There's no rush here. Take your time to explore at your own pace, moor up to visit charming waterside villages, or just relax on deck and soak in the peace. Time seems to slow down, and every moment is yours to savor.

After returning our boat, we also visited the Kelpies! These are 30 meter tall horse head sculptures. It depicts mythological shape-shifting aquatic spirit in Scottish Folklore. They are said to haunt rivers and streams usually in shape of a horse.

Conclusion:
Renting a narrow boat in Falkirk promises a voyage into tranquility and timelessness. Whether it's a romantic getaway or a family bonding experience, it's a chance to disconnect, unwind, and connect with Scotland's beauty in a way you've never experienced before. Let the magic of Scotland's canals steal your heart on this unforgettable journey. I will forever talk about this magical boat ride and suggest everyone do this trip at least once in their lifetime.
